Further Information About LoRa Technology and Lora Modules

LoRa is a long distance data communications technology that can operate at low power. It is sometimes described as a lightweight alternative to cellular communications. LoRa end point devices are capable of being battery powered, making it ideal for environments where a mains power supply is not feasible. It also has the advantage of operating in free to use ISM bands, meaning that there is no need to engage with a network operator and it is possible to run a private network. However public solutions do exist using LoRaWAN, a networking protocol that operates at a layer above the basic LoRa communication protocol.

Key Features and Benefits of our LoRa Modules

Our LoRa modules are renowned for their compact size, high efficiency, and energy-saving capabilities, making them a preferred choice for a wide range of applications. Here are some of the key features and benefits:

  • Low Power Consumption: Designed to consume minimal power, our LoRa modules can be run on a battery for extended periods.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to other cellular technologies, LoRa modules are relatively inexpensive, making them accessible for various applications, and don’t incur running cost via cellular charges.
  • Small Form Factor:, With our advanced System-in-Package design, our modules are ideal for integration into small devices without compromising performance. Our LoRa/BLE module with onboard antennas offers an unparalleled level of integration
  • Wireless Connectivity: Our LoRa modules enable seamless wireless connectivity, allowing devices to communicate without the need for cumbersome cables. LoRa offers excellent penetration in difficult RF environments.
  • Fully Certified: Our modules are fully certified for global markets, allowing customers to get to market faster and avoid this time consuming and expensive process

These features make our LoRa modules an excellent choice for developers looking to create innovative, energy-efficient wireless devices.

Applications of LoRa modules

LoRa modules are incredibly versatile and find applications across a broad spectrum of industries. Some of the most common uses include:

  • Metering: LoRa modules are ideal for metering applications, especially water metering where there will not necessarily be a power supply easily available.
  • Environmental Sensing LoRa modules can be used for environmental sensing applications, detecting conditions such as temperature, humidity, air quality and so on.
  • Smart Building/Industrial Site monitoring LoRa is ideally suited to applications managing a large site or large building; often a single LoRa gateway is sufficient to cover the entire area.
  • Smart Agriculture: Agricultural sites may not have reliable cellular coverage, making LoRa an ideal technology for monitoring in such an environment. Applications include irrigation management and animal tracking.
  • Parking management Car parks can be notoriously difficult environments to use cellular technology, especially underground ones. LoRa offers an ideal solution for such cases.

LoRa flexibility

Lora is a highly flexible technology. The basic LoRa communication protocol offers an efficient low power communication technology. LoRa WAN can be used as a “ready to go” networking layer on top of this, although its use is not obligatory. Security services can also be layered on top, depending on the requirements of the applications.

Insight SIP’s LoRa modules are combined LoRa/BLE devices; this means that a LoRa end point can be easily configured and set up via a simple phone or tablet application, and ongoing management can be carried out by the same means.

Our BLE LoRa modules offer a wide range of interfaces to connect external sensors or other devices.

The difference between Wi-Fi 6 and previous upgrades to the Wi-Fi Standard

Up until Wi-Fi 6, upgrades to the Wi-Fi standard were mainly about enabling higher data rates. Typically each Wi-Fi “generation” (Wi-Fi 4, 5 etc) increased data speeds by nearly an order of magnitude.

Wi-Fi 6 is somewhat different. It offers a modest increase in maximum throughput, but is mainly aimed at solving some other long-standing issues with Wi-Fi, namely

  • Congestion with dense networks – Wi-Fi has a limited number of principal channels so networks can easily become congested. Via ODFMA, Wi-Fi 6 offers more efficient network usage allowing multiple devices to share the same network. This is especially true for cases where there are many devices with modest data requirements.
  • Improved Power Consumption – Previous Wi-Fi versions demanded that devices were in constant communication with access points, even if they had no data to transmit. Wi-Fi 6 enables the Target Wake Time feature that allows devices to sleep for extended periods and thus save power.
  • Network Interference Management – Devices could be blocked by adjacent networks, even if they weren’t really causing interference issues. Network “colouring” enables better co-existence of neighbouring networks.
  • Spatial Separation of Data Streams – MU-MIMO -Multiple user Multiple Input Multiple Out data streams uses multiple antennas to allow the same access point to direct different data streams in different directions.

More details about Wi-FI 6 and why these upgrades make it much more suited for IOT applications are discussed in the following article WiFi 6 – what it is, why it is different to previous WiFi upgrades, and why it is important for IOT

Antenna-in-Package (AiP) solutions

Insight SiP is leading system miniaturization onto the next level, where the antenna is no longer a separate component within the wireless device but is integrated in the package, thus the concept of antenna-in-package or AiP.

Today in each mobile device there are numerous communication modules that exchange wireless data with the external environment. Until now, in most cases, the antenna has been designed independently as a printed shape on the PCB or as an individual component to be assembled near the RF front end chip with an associated matching circuit.

Apart from the size of such a solution the assembly of a separate antenna on the application board still presents difficulties during design and manufacture. In fact, such operations are not cost effective as they require qualified RF personnel at the design phase and often expert tweaking during ramp up and even manufacture. This is needed to carry out the necessary adjustment to obtain a good impedance matching between the antenna and the RF front end.

It is understandable that the integration of the antenna into the module brings a huge advantage in terms of cost and performance.

Insight SiP has designed RF SiPs over the past few years, based on various substrate technologies such as LTCC, laminate or IPD. The company has also conducted R&D work on antenna design, in collaboration with university partners. This has lead to SiP solutions which also integrate the antenna - called AiP (Antenna In Package).

Insight SiP has applied its unique AiP design methodology to various applications including a quad-band GSM antenna, a 2.4GHz ISM band antenna and a challenging UHF band antenna.
