BioSerenity selects Insight SIP’s 1507-AX module for its “Neuronaute+” device which enables remote EEG tests
Analysis of neurological problems via EEG (electroencephalograms) is a complex medical domain. Historically it has relied on highly trained staff across the full diagnostic pathway, from setting up and managing EEG tests to analysis of the data. For certain issues – for example following seizures or head trauma, a rapid analysis is highly desirable, whereas for others long term monitoring is beneficial.
Responding to these different demands is challenging for many healthcare providers, especially for smaller or more remote facilities, where the number of trained specialists will be quite limited and those people may not be available at all times.
BioSerenity offers a full suite of solutions and services to address this need, from medical devices to acquire data to remote clinical analysis services operating 24/7, connected via cloud based services.
The key elements of the BioSerenity offering are as follows:
- IceCap – an innovative EEG electrode device that can be fitted quickly and easily with a limited amount of training, and ensures the correct placement of sensors.
- The “Neuronaute+” device which attaches to the ICECap or other EEG electrodes set, and stores and transmits data onward to a local tablet and onto the cloud
- The Bioserenity cloud where EEG data can be stored and be remotely analysed by expert clinicians, assisted by AI algorithms based on its “Large Brain Model” – within 30 minutes for urgent cases.
These elements can be used individually or together depending on the needs of the patient or healthcare provider.
The Neuronaute+ device acts as the acquisition device between the ICECap sensor device and the Cloud. It connects wireless by Bluetooth and WiFi to an Android device which acts as a remote command and allows visualization of the signals to check correct setup.
Bioserenity selected Insight SIP’s ISP1507-AX (encapsulating the Nordic Semiconductor nRF52832) to act as the Bluetooth connectivity device in the Neuronaute.

The Bluetooth connection is initially used by the tablet or phone to establish a connection to a particular Neuronaute+ device, to configure the Neuronaute+ WiFi connection (either direct to the tablet or to a router). The Bluetooth interface is then used to control EEG analysis session – starting and stopping recording and monitoring and reporting issues, amongst other features. Wi-Fi is used for bulk data transfer due to the volume of data generated.
The connection between the Neuronaute device and the smartphone or tablet is made in a secure manner, ensuring that only authorized devices have access to the patient data.
By using wireless connectivity, the Neuronaute allows testing whilst the patient is moving, and also allows practical longer term monitoring at home, with storage capacity for up to 72 hours. The Neuronaute is also used in intensive care where the wireless connectivity allows easier access to the patient by medical staff and is less restrictive for the patient. It also can be used in the operating room, where clear separation between sterile and non-sterile areas is required. By contrast, traditional wired solutions require the patient to be largely immobile.
Pierre Prot, Hardware Lead at Bioserenity said “We chose Insight SIP’s module as it offered a ready-made integrated solution for the BLE connectivity part of our design. The miniature size of the module allows us to keep the Neuronaute+ dimensions down so that it is an easy to wear device. We also appreciate the support and reliability that comes from working with a European company”
Nick Wood, Sales and Marketing Director for Insight SIP said “We are delighted to be chosen by BioSerenity to be part of this innovative solution. With ever increasing demand for healthcare in the western world, there is a clear need for this kind of solution that maximises productivity and efficiency without compromise on clinical excellence.”
The Neuronaute+ is approved for use across Europe and is also approved by the FDA for use in the United States.
